About
Black Diamond Equipment is a leading manufacturer of equipment for climbing, skiing, and mountain sports, headquartered in Holladay, Utah, with a global office in Innsbruck, Austria. The company was founded on December 1, 1989, by a group of former employees of Chouinard Equipment Ltd., led by Peter Metcalf. Black Diamond Equipment is owned by Clarus Corporation, which also owns Pieps and ClimbOn! Skincare. The company's roots trace back to the late 1950s when climber Yvon Chouinard began hand-forging pitons and selling them from the trunk of his car in Yosemite Valley. After several product-liability lawsuits and financial difficulties, Chouinard Equipment Ltd. filed for bankruptcy in 1989. The assets were then purchased by Metcalf and his team, who relocated the company to Utah to be closer to the climbing and skiing opportunities provided by the Wasatch Mountains. Black Diamond Equipment has since grown into a global brand with a strong reputation for innovation and quality. The company designs and manufactures a wide range of products, including carabiners, quickdraws, harnesses, climbing protection, belay devices, helmets, ice tools, crampons, ice screws, bouldering pads, and big wall equipment. They also produce skiing and avalanche safety equipment, as well as mountain products like tents, shelters, lighting, trekking poles, and backpacks. The company's commitment to excellence is driven by its team of passionate climbers and skiers who continuously push the boundaries of gear design and performance. Black Diamond's innovative gear has set industry standards and is trusted by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. Black Diamond Equipment stands for the spirit of adventure and the values of the outdoor sports community, striving to create the best gear possible for climbers and skiers around the world
